The court has sought the government’s stance on improving oversight of digital content, hinting at potential stricter regulations. The ministry’s directive reminds streaming services to comply with existing laws amid rising complaints about obscene or vulgar content. In a recent directive, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has urged over-the-top (OTT) platforms to strictly adhere to age-based content classification guidelines as outlined in the Code of Ethics under the IT Rules, 2021. This advisory comes in response to growing concerns over objectionable content available on digital platforms.
The move follows controversy surrounding remarks made by YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, popularly known as BeerBiceps, during an episode of India’s Got Latent. His content was recently criticized as “perverse” during Supreme Court proceedings, prompting a wider discussion on online content regulation. A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and N. Kotiswar Singh has sought the central government’s views on enhancing oversight in the digital media landscape.
“We would like to do something. If the government will willingly do it, we will be very happy,” the court stated, suggesting the possibility of stricter regulations if the executive branch does not take proactive measures.
In its directive, Deputy Secretary Amarendra Singh reminded streaming services and their self-regulatory bodies to comply with existing regulations and to proactively address any violations. The advisory underscores the ministry’s commitment to ensuring responsible programming, particularly in light of increasing complaints from parliamentarians, statutory bodies, and the general public about alleged obscene or vulgar content on OTT and social media platforms.
The government’s latest move aims to safeguard viewers, especially minors, while promoting a more accountable and ethical digital entertainment ecosystem. As India’s OTT landscape continues to expand, the emphasis on responsible content classification is expected to play a crucial role in maintaining a balance between creative freedom and audience protection.
